This morning I was speaking at an event called The Confidence Conversation that I host with two colleagues. We help women find the inner confidence they need to wade through the mayhem of this long and sometime, messy midlife in three key areas: sense of style, health and fitness and my bit - an empowered mindset.
Confidence is not about being bold and brave (although it can certainly lead to this.) The older I get, the more I realise confidence comes in knowing yourself, in trusting your inner voice, in leaning in more to who you really are, and what you actually want.
Standing in front of a room today pontificating about women in midlife is one of my favourite places to be. I literally think I was born with a soap box under my arm! For someone else however, that might well be their idea of hell. And there are areas of life I have little confidence in, where others would’t blink an eye. Confidence is not about what you do externally, but how you feel internally.
As I told the room full of women this morning, it can be really easy to get so caught up in the day to day life, the roles and responsibilities, and the external demands, you can lose connection to your inner self… and with that, your sense of core confidence in who you are, and what you really want.
Now I know we’re in the Purpose, Passion & Priorities section of this year long Midlife Daily journal guide… and so what I’m about to write might sounds counterintuitive; Purpose isn’t always about achieving or pursuing. Purpose is about having the confidence to know yourself and live by your true values, even amid the mayhem of all the roles you have. I know plenty of people who seem purposeful with plenty of accolades who aren’t living. Purpose is first and foremost about being present. Even during the hard times, the mundane times, the good times.
Knowing yourself (so much of what this journalling process is about), and then living from a place of purpose, passion and the intention of being you, will allow a sense of inner confidence that no amount of public speaking training will give you.
