In the early noughties, a pseudo-posturing phrase started being bandied about as women in particular began to feel the generational shift and take advantage of living, looking and feeling younger for longer.
“50 is the new 40!” magazines would scream.
“40 is the new 30!” presenters would pronounce.
As the reality of traditional ages changed dramatically due to swift and profound shifts in fitness, health, career structures, fashion trends, and travel opportunities, the 40 of our parents was not the 40 we were experiencing. Pop culture, media and celebs started highlighting that people were ageing less quickly and the energy and experiences of our parent’s 40’s was now been seen and felt in our 50’s and beyond.
That has continued but the narrative still hankers to the idea that younger is still better. 40 is the new 30 implies that 30 is still better than 40.
In my latest book Midlife, redefined: Better, Bolder, Brighter I offer a far more truer distinction.
40 is the new 40. There has never been a better, more choice-laden, (pressurised) 40 for women in history.
50 is the new 50. There has never been a more beautiful, fitter, role-breaking 50 in history.
60 is the new 60. Literally. Not even a hundred years ago, life expectancy for women was 57.9
70 is the new 70. There has never been a more liberating, sexy 70 in history.
What all these new versions of age (and I don’t just mean in terms of how we look, but how we feel, what’s possible, what’s no longer restrictive) is that they are being redefined, reformed, and redesigned.
By us.
Redefining our age and stage, whatever that is, is a proactive, passion, purpose, priority- led choice (or we can fall into the old, outdated, conditioned versions).
So as we forge through in our Midlife, redefined Daily Journal Guide adventure and finish up our revisit to Purpose, Passion & Priorities, we’re redefining the age and stage you are in and the one you are moving towards.
